Taliban ‘will abandon peace deal unless promises are kept’

The Taliban have warned that a peace accord struck with the United States is close to collapse, accusing American and Afghan forces of stepping up attacks on them and repeatedly delaying a release of insurgent prisoners.

Warning that they would retaliate if the violence continued, the Taliban said that their forces had suffered drone strikes and bombing raids over recent days. The militants said Washington and Kabul had violated the deal struck in February, and that they were prepared to abandon it if the pledges were not met.

Chief among these is a prisoner exchange, intended to build confidence before direct peace talks with the Afghan government, which the Taliban have resisted until now. Kabul was to free 5,000 Taliban, while the insurgents released 1,500
